FAQ

Here are some of the most common questions we receive from families who are exploring the world of HCBS:

What is HCBS?

HCBS stands for Home and Community-Based Services. The meaning of HCBS is to provide supportive care that allows individuals with disabilities, chronic conditions, or seniors to remain in their homes or communities instead of institutional settings. Under Medicaid, this program offers a variety of services such as personal care, skilled nursing, and respite care. The official definition of HCBS highlights its focus on independence, dignity, and accessibility while helping people live safely and comfortably outside of nursing facilities.

HCBS Eligibility?

Eligibility for HCBS is determined primarily through Medicaid guidelines. Applicants must usually demonstrate both medical and financial need. This means they require assistance with daily living activities, have a qualifying health condition, and meet income and resource limits set by the state. It’s important to apply through local social services to confirm qualifications and explore the specific services available.

What types of services are provided under HCBS?

HCBS may include personal care, respite care, therapy services, transportation assistance, home modifications, and case management, among other supports.

How to apply for the HCBS waiver?

You can apply for the HCBS Waiver by visiting your local Medicaid office or reaching out to us for support. Our team will guide you through the application process, help you collect the required documents, and assist in developing a tailored care plan.

What are the advantages of the HCBS waiver?

The HCBS Waiver enables individuals to remain in their homes or communities while accessing the care they require, helping to maintain their independence and quality of life. It also offers flexibility in choosing both the type of care and the caregiver.

Can family members be caregivers under the HCBS waiver?

In certain situations, family members may qualify to receive payment as caregivers through the HCBS Waiver, depending on the program rules. Reach out to us for detailed information about your eligibility and available options.

How does the HCBS waiver differ from other Medicaid home care services?

The HCBS Waiver provides enhanced services and support that exceed the scope of standard Medicaid home care. It allows individuals to receive care in their own homes or communities instead of in nursing homes or assisted living facilities and may include specialized options such as home modifications or transportation assistance.

Can HCBS be used with other Medicaid programs?

Yes, HCBS can often be combined with other Medicaid programs or waivers to create a comprehensive care plan tailored to individual needs.

What is the HCBS Program?

Home and Community-Based Services is a care program that focuses on ensuring safety, comfort, and autonomy through personalized support in familiar surroundings. Clients benefit from assistance with essential daily activities, allowing them to maintain their routines with ease and dignity.

HCBS is a key project focused on giving full support and offerings to folks who want to stay independent and live happily in their places or local areas. These offerings are specifically tailored for sufferers with challenges, elderlies, and those requiring assistance due to medical or age-related challenges.

The primary objective of offerings is to empower folks to experience rewarding lives without the requirement to transition into organizational environments. By providing individualized attention and aid with routine chores, the program ensures that clients can remain in their familiar surroundings while receiving the help they need. At our agency, under this program, we offer a broad array of aid alternatives, like personal aid, conveyance, cooking, and access to social activities.

Eligibility Criteria in Colorado

HCBS programOfferings are accessible to sufferers who fulfill particular conditions, assuring that the assistance is targeted to those who need it most. Eligibility is determined based on medical, age-related, and social factors. Below are the primary categories of individuals who may qualify:

  • Persons with impairments. Sufferers with bodily, intellectual, or psychological difficulties require long-term support to manage daily tasks.
  • Older Adults. Elderly individuals face challenges related to aging, such as persistent restricted mobility illnesses, or memory-related conditions.
  • Individuals with Chronic Conditions. Those living with chronic health issues demand continuous care assistance to maintain a safe and healthy lifestyle.

In addition to these categories, eligibility can also depend on factors such as the living environment and family support system. Each case is evaluated individually.

Eligibility assessments are conducted by professionals who evaluate the unique necessities, past health issues and residential conditions. The goal is to ensure that the assistance offered corresponds to the client’s unique requirements, enabling them to live independently or with minimal assistance.

What Can You Expect From HCBS Program?

The HCBS program not only ensures the safety, comfort, and independence of clients but also provides a unique opportunity for family members to become paid caregivers. Relatives can step into a caregiving role, offering essential daily assistance through HCBS services, all while receiving compensation for their efforts under the waiver.

To support families, the program offers resources like training, guidance, and regular wellness checks to ensure both clients and caregivers feel confident and secure. Safety measures, such as home modifications and accessibility improvements, further enhance the caregiving environment. My sincere thanks to you and your staff at Mercy Home Services for coming to my 1 rescue back in June. Your Caregiver helped me shower daily, made my bed, prepared meals and did food shopping, light cleaning and the laundry. She was a gem, always on time, and her manner and demeanor exhibited her many years of experience as an expert Caregiver. She was dependable, calm, caring and trustworthy. I also enjoyed her lovely sense of humor. I also salute you for your flexibility in making the effort to accommodate a prospective client at the “last minute,” as well as your reasonable cost for the excellent care received.

I was referred to Mercy Home Services when my Mom was coming home from a hospital. I was out of town and had to organize everything remotely. The staff was extremely helpful and professional. I was very stressed and totally lost but they handled everything from start to finish. One of their care managers went out to the hospital to assess mom that same day and was able to get Mom home safely. What I liked the most was their flexibility and quick action. Mom came home with 24-hour care for her first few days and then was able to slowly reduce hours to a manageable schedule. Highly recommend!

As a baby boomer, I am part of the generation that’s trying to navigate the waters of eldercare. Mercy Home Services has been an invaluable part of my equation for making sure my mom receives the highest level of care and support. From transportation to care appointments, to 24/7 supervision and assistance, their staff is both professional and compassionate. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Their caregivers have done a phenomenal job for our family. Mom wanted to stay home and we just could not manage her care alone due to our work and families. If it weren’t for Mercy Home Services, it would have been impossible for us to keep Mom home. She really enjoys the company of her caregiver and is living life again. Thank you, Mercy Home Services for all what you have done for us. We highly recommend them to anyone who needs high-quality care for an loved one.

Mercy Home Services in every way ensured that I could meet my wife ’s needs and help me to have time to care for the other myriad of things that go along with caring for someone who is sick. You don’t know how much I needed you all. Thank you is not enough. I will recommend you and your staff to any and all that want or need to have someone take care of their loved ones – with all of the glowing words that I can find. Until you walk in the shoes of a caretaker you can’t fully understand the help that you need. AND when you find it, it is a miracle. My heartfelt and grateful thanks to all of your miracles.

Mercy Home Services was recommended to us when we were in desperate need of care for our mother. She had fallen a few days before we were to leave town and couldn’t she couldn’t be left alone. Our experience has been that Mercy Home Services was able to provide us with caregivers on short notice who were knowledgeable, efficient, dependable and kind. Emily, our case manager, has been so responsive and helpful. Amy who did the intake gave us assurance that care was on the way! Now, we are ready to recommend the Mercy Home Services to others.
