    FAQ

Here are some of the most common questions we receive from families who are exploring the world of IHSS:

    What is IHSS?

IHSS stands for In-Home Supportive Services, which is a Medicaid-funded program. It is a program designed to help elderly, blind, or disabled individuals remain safely in their own homes rather than moving to a facility. But what does that really mean? It means that family members, friends, or other caregivers can assist with daily needs such as meal preparation, light housekeeping, personal care, and transportation, and receive compensation for doing so. The goal is to support independence while ensuring safety and comfort.

    Who is Eligible for IHSS?

Individuals who qualify for Colorado IHSS must be enrolled in Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid program) and reside in Colorado. They and their potential caregiver must have an assessed need for personal care, homemaking, or health maintenance services, and meet Medicaid’s financial eligibility rules. Not sure how do I know if I qualify? Start by confirming your Medicaid enrollment and requesting an eligibility assessment in IHSS.

How Much Do IHSS Caregivers Get Paid?

Under the IHSS program, payment rates often vary depending on the volume of care (number of hours) and the complexity of the services provided. For example, specialized services may have higher hourly rates. At our agency, family caregivers can earn up to $60,000 per year. You can contact us to find out our rates for the specific type of services you will be providing.

What are the Max Hours for IHSS?

The number of IHSS hours a recipient can receive is determined by their individual assessment and care requirements. Typically, those with the highest level of need may be eligible for up to 283 hours per month, while recipients who are not severely impaired may receive up to 195 hours per month. The final approved hours are set based on a detailed evaluation of the recipient’s condition and the level of assistance needed for daily activities.

    Is IHSS Federal or State?

IHSS (In-Home Support Services) is a state-administered Medicaid program in Colorado, managed by the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing. It is not a federal program. While Medicaid is jointly funded by the federal and state governments, the IHSS program is specifically provided through Colorado’s state Medicaid services.

    How to Apply for IHSS?

To apply for IHSS in Colorado, individuals must first sign up for Colorado Medicaid. After enrollment, contact your county’s Department of Human Services to request an IHSS assessment. A case manager will evaluate your eligibility and determine the number of care hours you qualify for based on your needs. Once approved, your family member or friend can become a family caregiver through our home care agency.

    How Does IHSS Work?

IHSS provides eligible individuals with individualized in-home support, helping them remain safe and independent at home. A care plan is developed, outlining the type and extent of assistance needed. Caregivers can be family members, friends, or professional caregivers. Caregivers track and submit timesheets for payment. Our agency helps coordinate care, provides support and guidance, and adjusts the care plan as needs change. This flexible approach allows recipients to receive care from people they trust while maintaining the highest quality of care.

How Long Does it Take to Get IHSS Approved?

The timeline approval varies, but applicants should generally expect the process to take between 30 to 90 days or longer. This period includes application submission, scheduling an assessment, completing any required documentation, and final approval from the county office. Delays can happen if paperwork is incomplete or if there are high volumes of applications, so it is always best to start the process as soon as possible.

CAN I GET PAID TO CARE FOR MY FAMILY MEMBERS THROUGH IHSS?

Yes, IHSS allows family members or friends to become paid caregivers if the person they care for qualifies for Medicaid and requires in-home care. You can apply to provide care and receive compensation.

    Understanding In-Home Support Services (IHSS)

In Colorado’s care landscape, the In-Home Support Services program stands as a crucial source of support for both caregivers and those they care for. This program plays an essential role in recognizing the hard work and dedication of family caregivers, who often work tirelessly with little acknowledgment. This service is crucial for those who need ongoing support but wish to preserve their autonomy in a familiar environment. IHSS in Colorado provides a wide array of support catering to diverse needs.

These services are typically delivered by trained caregivers, who may be family members, friends, or professionals hired through an IHSS agency.

    Eligibility Criteria in Colorado

In Colorado, the program serves both children and adults who require assistance due to various circumstances. To qualify for IHSS in Colorado, applicants must meet certain eligibility standards to ensure that support is provided to those who genuinely need it.

IHSS in ColoradoHere’s an overview of the eligibility factors:

    1. Age: serves both children under 18 and adults over 18 who require in-home support due to disability, illness, or age-related challenges.
    2. Income Limits: As a Medicaid-funded program, IHSS requires participants to meet certain income limits to ensure that resources are directed to those in financial need.
    3. Medical Necessity: Applicants must demonstrate a need for ongoing care due to a chronic illness, disability, or condition that limits their ability to perform daily activities independently.
    4. Disability Requirements: Applicants must present verified documentation, such as medical records and assessments from care professionals, to confirm their disability status.
    5. Functional Eligibility: Beyond disability, applicants must show a certain level of functional impairment, indicating a need for help with tasks like bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility.
    6. Residency: Colorado residency is required for eligibility.
    7. Caregiver Relationship: For those choosing the self-directed care option, where family caregivers can be compensated. The caregiver’s relationship with the recipient will affect eligibility for compensation.

These criteria help ensure that IHSS support reaches those most in need of in-home care and assistance.

Your relative or friend must have or be able to qualify for Medicaid long-term care benefits. We guarantee stable hours with a convenient, consistent schedule each week congruent with your wishes.

    IHSS Enrollment Process

Enrolling in the IHSS program is a structured process that ensures individuals receive the care and support they need in a way that is tailored to their specific circumstances.

The process of enrolling in the program consists of several steps:

    1. Medicaid Eligibility. Individuals must first be enrolled in an approved Medicaid program that supports IHSS, such as HCBS-EBD (Elderly, Blind, and Disabled Waiver), HCBS-SCI (Spinal Cord Injury Waiver), or CHCBS (Children’s Home and Community-Based Services). Without Medicaid enrollment, individuals are not eligible for IHSS.
    2. Initial Assessment with a Case Manager. Applicants meet with a case manager to discuss their specific needs and determine eligibility. During this meeting, the case manager will assess the individual’s health status, care needs, and daily challenges to develop an appropriate care plan.
    3. Creation of a Personalized Care Plan. The case manager creates a care plan based on the assessment, detailing the services that IHSS will provide. This customized plan helps ensure that the individual’s unique needs are met effectively.
    4. Selecting and Training a Caregiver. The participant selects a caregiver who may be a family member or a caregiver from our agency. Caregivers undergo specific training to comply with IHSS standards, ensuring they can safely and effectively deliver care. This choice empowers participants to have trusted, familiar support in their daily lives.
    5. Approval and Service Initiation. Once all steps are completed and the care plan is approved, IHSS services can begin. Ongoing monitoring by a case manager ensures that the care remains effective and is adjusted as the participant’s needs evolve.

By following these steps, individuals can successfully access personalized in-home care, improving their quality of life while maintaining control over their care decisions.

    Who Hires the Caregiver?

Caregivers receive compensation according to Medicaid’s established rates up to $60,000 per year, ensuring fair wages while adhering to state budget limitations. This payment model encourages more family members to take on caregiving roles without sacrificing financial security.

Parents and seniors have the option to select a professional caregiver provided by our agency, ensuring they receive tailored assistance suited to their needs. Our services are accessible around the clock, including weekends and holidays, to provide uninterrupted care for your loved ones. We offer specialized support. Our welcoming team is available to offer additional information or arrange an in-home consultation to evaluate your individual needs. My sincere thanks to you and your staff at Mercy Home Services for coming to my 1 rescue back in June. Your Caregiver helped me shower daily, made my bed, prepared meals and did food shopping, light cleaning and the laundry. She was a gem, always on time, and her manner and demeanor exhibited her many years of experience as an expert Caregiver. She was dependable, calm, caring and trustworthy. I also enjoyed her lovely sense of humor. I also salute you for your flexibility in making the effort to accommodate a prospective client at the “last minute,” as well as your reasonable cost for the excellent care received.

I was referred to Mercy Home Services when my Mom was coming home from a hospital. I was out of town and had to organize everything remotely. The staff was extremely helpful and professional. I was very stressed and totally lost but they handled everything from start to finish. One of their care managers went out to the hospital to assess mom that same day and was able to get Mom home safely. What I liked the most was their flexibility and quick action. Mom came home with 24-hour care for her first few days and then was able to slowly reduce hours to a manageable schedule. Highly recommend!

Their caregivers have done a phenomenal job for our family. Mom wanted to stay home and we just could not manage her care alone due to our work and families. If it weren’t for Mercy Home Services, it would have been impossible for us to keep Mom home. She really enjoys the company of her caregiver and is living life again. Mercy Home Services in every way ensured that I could meet my wife ’s needs and help me to have time to care for the other myriad of things that go along with caring for someone who is sick. You don’t know how much I needed you all. Thank you is not enough. I will recommend you and your staff to any and all that want or need to have someone take care of their loved ones – with all of the glowing words that I can find. Until you walk in the shoes of a caretaker you can’t fully understand the help that you need. AND when you find it, it is a miracle. My heartfelt and grateful thanks to all of your miracles.

Mercy Home Services was recommended to us when we were in desperate need of care for our mother. She had fallen a few days before we were to leave town and couldn’t she couldn’t be left alone. Our experience has been that Mercy Home Services was able to provide us with caregivers on short notice who were knowledgeable, efficient, dependable and kind. Emily, our case manager, has been so responsive and helpful. Amy who did the intake gave us assurance that care was on the way! Now, we are ready to recommend the Mercy Home Services to others.
